5 out of 5 stars Seasoned Advice That Rings With Authenticity and Wisdom   March 5, 2008

For almost 40 years, Dan Poynter has been a successful publisher. Also he's been active in the publishing community and knows the straight story about results from authors who have followed the traditional publishing path. This book provides step-by-step counsel to produce an excellent self-published title. The basis of any book--whether self-published or through the traditional system--is an excellent and targeted manuscript.

With careful attention to detail, Poynter provides every reader the necessary steps to successfully produce a quality book but this book guides readers to even more about promotion, distribution, advertising and fulfillment. He reveals a key secret on page 23-24: "Another success secret is to cut out the intermediaries who are the commercial publishers and produce and sell the book yourself. You can take the author's royalty and the publisher's profit. You get all the rewards because you are both the author and the publisher." What isn't said in this section is that you are also taking the risk of possible failure. Successful self-publishing will involve using every aspect of this well-crafted book and following the additional resources in the book.

Poynter is to be commended for producing such a thorough reference book loaded with such resources that writers will refer to it over and over.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful book   February 13, 2008
As the owner of a small publishing company, I found this book to be very helpful. A great resource.

5 out of 5 stars Everything I wanted to know   February 8, 2008
This manual provides everything one needs to know to self-publish. I wish I had read this a few years ago. It gives short-cuts to printers, publicity and most importantly, how to maximize the use of your advertising budget. A book that is incredibly valuable to authors and publishers as well. This book contains a wealth of good information. I am grateful to Dan Poynter for sharing this knowledge with others.

5 out of 5 stars All that you would want a How-To book to be   January 26, 2008

This is one of the most useful `how to" books that I have ever read, because - although over 400 pages long, and crammed with a wealth of information - it is clear, concise, authoritative and well laid out.

As a new author seeking to publish my first book, I asked a marketing expert where I could get the best written guidance. "Dan Poynter's Self-Publishing Manual," came from his lips without hesitation, and from my reading of this book, I have no hesitation in agreeing with his judgement.

Both interesting and informative, Dan's book is based the experience of not just a few years, but a lifetime's experience.

5 out of 5 stars Acclaimed the Best Self-Publishing Manual on the Market   January 24, 2008

In his best-selling book, Aiming at Amazon, Aaron Shepard says that Dan Poynter's Self-Publishing Manual is one of the three books that still lead their field. (The other two, he claims, are The Complete Guide to Self-Publishing by Tom and Marilyn Ross and 1001 Ways to Market Your Books by John Kremer.)

However, after giving these books their due credit, Aaron says that "...the approach they espouse is showing its age." They are, he concludes, "still geared toward breaking into the publishing world as it was decades ago."

Aaron, of course, is entitled to his own opinion. But his opinion runs counter to those of many prestigious reviewers who claim Poynter's book to be the best self-publishing manual on the market. Perhaps the words "wide scope vs. limited view" and "brief summaries vs. detailed descriptions" can be used to resolve these differences.

Aaron's books, Perfect Pages and Aiming at Amazon, provide detailed, practical instructions on how to use the very latest self-publishing techniques, procedures, and practices to create, format for POD presses, publish, and sell your book. (On Amazon, see my reviews of these books.) But what his books lack, when compared to Poynter's, is the COMPLETE list of topics, the FULL RANGE of knowledge about the publishing industry offered by Poynter's 16 Editions and 27 years of self-publishing experience. One look at Poynter's table of contents will make clear this difference.

Admittedly, Poynter's book is geared toward teaching you how to establish your very own, full-blown, self-publishing business. If you are not interested in starting your own publishing company, but wish, instead, only to get your book or books published and listed for sale on Amazon (as I do), much of Poynter's advice will not be useful to you. (The same goes for Tom and Marilyn's book.) But much of what Poynter says will be helpful. Anyway, if you are serious about self-publishing your own book, you need to broaden your knowledge of this rapidly expanding field. You won't feel you have wasted your money if you buy this book.
