 Annoying and Preachy August 28, 2008

I read this book for my book club, and I was surprised to find the book in the "religious fiction" section at my local B&N. This should have been my first warning. I thought that this was an odd selection for a book club, as you don't know who you are going to offend when you express a negative opinion on a religiously-themed book. As it turned out, none of the 5 members who came to discuss the book remotely liked it, and all had trouble finishing the book.
I personally had been expecting something more compelling, not just "You decided to be independent, and now it's all your fault." I also found the "hook" of a murder of an innocent girl to be manipulative; purposely tugging at your heart strings was cheap (I did not expect a "Law and Order: Special Victims Unit" episode out of this book.)
In short, this was not the book that I expected -- and I would definitely not be telling anybody "You have to read it." I'm sorry I wasted time, money and emotions on this book.
 Single lens for multifacted view August 28, 2008
This book presents some unique concepts to try and answer in a simple context the relation of God to evil and our relationship with God. Unfortunately, The view is too simple. God is not an eccentric grandfather, and the book underplays justice to satisfy its version of a loving God. It is difficult to accurately depict God's nature because He is fully King, Father, Lover and Judge combined. To focus on one without the others is to not truly know God.

Unexpected Encounter August 28, 2008
Last week, I was traveling in Nashville on business. I was given a copy of The Shack and invited to a talk/book signing with the author. I am a publishing professional and pastor who is an avid reader, often disappointed by books that don't measure up to the hype. But there was no disappointment here.
I was absolutely captivated by the imagery that the author uses to make God tangible and meaningful to the reader. The book challenged my conceptions of God, opened an emotional door for dialog with God about pain long hidden in my own heart, and expanded my imagination.
This book will inspire some and offend others, but will not leave anyone bored or unchanged. It is a quick and enjoyable read, which I wholeheartedly recommend.

Fabulous. Be ready to set aside your religious boxes and ENJOY the beauty of and the revelations of a God that loves you beyond anyone else ever could/would or should. We had the tragedy of loosing a daughter suddenly, this book is a healing balm in the face of loss, but much much more. Everyone experiences loss that can take our human desire for "hope" and put in on some dark and dusty shelve. This book blows off the dust with a power washer, heals your paralysis and moves you into your future. Don't just buy one, purchase six and spread the "good news" of faith and hope to those you love. Like my friends and relatives, they all thanked me with a huge "Ah, that was just what I needed".
